Velvet

18x24"

Watercolor, Charcoal

The darkest areas of this piece carry the greatest sense of softness. Charcoal-black forms swell and curve like velvet, absorbing light and inviting contact. Where one might expect shadow or hardness, there is instead a plush depth—dense, rich—comforting in its absence of color.

In contrast, the pink and red petals feel taut and muscular, stretched across the surface rather than delicate. The usual hierarchy is reversed: the flower’s color becomes structure, while darkness becomes texture. Softness migrates away from the expected place, inviting the viewer to settle in the shadowy folds.

Velvet suggests that intimacy does not always reside in what is visibly lush, but in what recedes, darkens, and quietly holds everything else in place.
