Ambiguity is the heart of this piece.
On one hand, the bouquet reads as the obvious “present”—a traditional token of affection, apology, or desire. It’s bright, deliberate, and culturally coded as a gift.
But the body complicates that. The figure is nude, turned away, vulnerable, and physically present in a way the flowers can’t be. The roses may be what’s offered, but the body is what’s truly at stake. It suggests that in intimate exchanges, the real gift is often the self—time, access, touch, presence—while the flowers are a socially acceptable stand-in.
Patrick’s Presents lets the viewer decide which carries more weight, and whether one is meant to distract from the other.
